Primary School Instrumental Programs

Band & String Ensembles that shine!

At Directions In Music we take the pressure off when it comes to running a Primary School instrumental program!  We work together with parents, teachers and schools to help all of our school ensembles achieve their full potential. From initial parent meetings and instrument demonstrations right through to performances and specialist workshops, we manage everything so that you don’t have to!

We value our strong and supportive community of families, teachers, and schools.  We love collaborating across our schools, and we ensure that we are always working together to offer the best possible opportunities for the musical development of our students.

  • Quality teaching and learning opportunities
  • An individual DIM Program Manager is appointed to each of our schools to provide essential organisation, leadership and support
  • Regular Performances within your school community (assemblies, festivals, celebrations)
  • Instrument, equipment and resource advice/support
  • Great Admin and Communication through our DIM HQ

What Is Involved?

Weekly Sessions at school

Students will usually participate in 2 sessions per week  - an ensemble rehearsal, and an instrumental lesson.  We offer a range of lesson options, depending on each school's needs:

  • Private Lessons + Ensemble Rehearsal
  • Small Group Lessons (2-3 students) + Ensemble Rehearsal
  • Group Lessons (max 6 students)  + Ensemble Rehearsal
  • Ensemble Rehearsal only (external private lessons required)

Home Practice

It's important to set aside some practise time at home (about 10 minutes, 3-4 days a week is a great start), and you'll need to commit to the program for at least 1 school term.

Commitment

All DIM students need to commit to at least one school term. Learning an instrument is sometimes tricky, and it can take a little while to get the hang of it. There's no instant gratification when it comes to learning an instrument - but with our support, and a strong commitment, you'll stick with it  and be rewarded!

Can I join my school's String Program?

Our band programs are open to all students in year 3 and above.

Younger children are often still developing the motor skills and lung capacity required to start learning a band instrument, and we prefer for our students to start when they're really ready and able to manage their instrument!

  • Intermediate Band* - Yr 4 (or 2nd year of playing)
  • Senior Band - Yr 4/5/6 (1-3 years of playing experience)

  • Intermediate Strings* - Yr 3/4/5/6, students in their 2nd year of playing
